Proudly hosted by Manchester Frontrunners, join us at 10:30 am on Saturday 4th May 2024 for a chip-timed, community-focused 10 km road race through one of Manchester’s loveliest parks. Plus, indulge in a delectable array of homemade delights from our legendary charity cake sale. Enter using the link directly below, or scroll down to learn more.

Our Race and Course

Our 10 km Cake Race takes place on paved footpaths through Boggart Hole Clough in North Manchester, one of the city's largest and most beautiful parks. Our friendly and enthusiastic volunteers will be there to cheer you on as you run the three-lap course. There are slight challenges ahead, though, namely Angel Hill. It's steep, but thankfully short, and it's that hill that brings so many people back to our race year on year! We also have cash prizes for the top three finishers in each gender category, as well as other prizes for different age categories.

The race starts at 10:30 am and race numbers can only be collected in person from race HQ between 9:00 am and 10:15 am. A limited number of on-the-day registrations will be available until 10:10 am (2024 prices: £20 unaffiliated/£18 affiliated; cash only, no T-shirt).

Before our run, we’ll have Kate from Witness the Fitness leading our warm-up. Kate and her team provide personal training and community-based group training sessions at locations across Manchester. Check them out if you're looking to get fit and have fun!

Our Charity Cake Sale

There’s a reason we have cake in the name of our race! Once you finish the race, indulge in some home-baked treats from our charity cake sale. Each year we encourage participants or clubs to bake a cake for our sale afterwards. All proceeds go to George House Trust and the wonderful work they do in supporting people with HIV. We’ll also have special prizes for Best-Looking, Fastest-Selling and Campest Cakes!

Please note that there is no obligation to bake or buy any cake.

Race T-Shirts and Going Green

As part of our initiative to be as sustainable as possible, T-shirts will be an optional extra. Entrants up to and including Thursday 4th April will be given the choice of entry with a T-shirt, or entry without a T-shirt (race entry price will be slightly lower for this option). This year's T-shirt will be purple. Please note that anyone entering after this date will not have the option of entry with a T-shirt.

Getting There

Our cake race starts near the lake in Boggart Hole Clough, and the race HQ (site of bag drop and registration) is located by the lakeside cafe. Parking is available in the park’s car park off Charlestown Road, and the park is accessible by bus (nearest stop: Grange Park Road for 118, 149).

Got any more questions? If so, please contact us via Facebook or Instagram, or email our race director Sarah.

Note on participation for transgender/non-binary athletes, in light of UK Athletics/England Athletics' new transgender policy

Since 31st March 2023, UK Athletics (the national governing body for our sport) has ruled that transgender women may no longer compete in the female/women category in races at all levels, and should instead compete in the male/men category (i.e., their sex at birth). This is in line with an earlier ruling by World Athletics. As an LGBTQ+ running club affiliated and licensed with England Athletics (the chapter of UK Athletics for England), we were understandably very disappointed to hear of these rulings applying to athletes even at grassroots level. We also realise the rule may act as a deterrent for some against taking part in running altogether, which goes against our club's ethos of inclusion.

As our race is insured and licensed by UK Athletics, we are officially bound by their rules of competition, especially as regards prize-giving. However, we fully understand the distress a transgender athlete may feel in having to compete in a category in line with their sex at birth rather than their gender identity. Since the ruling in spring 2023, we have been working with other Frontrunner groups in the UK affiliated with England Athletics to try to find the best and most impactful way to influence England Athletics to reverse their decision, and we have begun consultation with England Athletics through a partner university in a project to bring about wider policy changes.

This year, we have included an “open” category (selectable as “other/not disclosed” when entering), and we plan to award prizes within this category, as with the men and women categories. We would therefore suggest that transgender women athletes who feel uncomfortable entering as male should select the “open” category when entering our race. Non-binary athletes may also wish to sign up to this category.  While we fully understand that some transgender athletes may still feel uncomfortable about taking part in this category, we feel that it is the most pragmatic course of action while we navigate these new rules while still striving to be inclusive and welcoming. Furthermore, we hope that our ongoing work with England Athletics and other Frontrunners clubs will help to change the ruling and bring about wider positive change within the sport.
